There are four candidates in the much-watched Toronto Centre contest, one of four federal byelections Monday. But two of them are Linda McQuaig and Chrystia Freeland — celebrity authors and thinkers who have turned the race into a two-woman battle over a shared pet issue: income inequality. Ms. McQuaig, for the NDP, and the Liberal Ms. Freeland have different prescriptions, and agreed to debate the issue (and others) this week with Financial Post Editor Terence Corcoran:
Unbelievable. Looks like the National Post is on a campaign to maintain the “Party Stranglehold” on democratic process. You better join the party!

First when the debate finally unfolded (more on this in a moment) the content was very similar to the Steve Pakin discussion. You will find some of my comments and a link to the podcast here. The Pakin discussion provides better content. Okay, back to Jarvis Collegiate.
The Opening Act – The Rights of Candidates
This debate was apparently organized by a number of associations in the Toronto Centre riding. It was moderated by a well known person – John Tory. It was NOT an All Candidates Debate. Once again, the organizers excluded a majority of the Candidates. This is a mistake and organizers who exclude candidates will continue to pay a price. This was no exception. I am surprised that the organizers didn’t learn from the debate on November 16 at St. Michael’s College. Those who are following these “debates” will recall that the behaviour of two candidates (which was linked to their not being invited) forced the “shut down” of the debate.
The opening act of the evening was Independent Candidate Candidate’s John Turmel protesting his exclusion from the debate. He stood on the stage and delayed the start of the debate (about 20 minutes) and was eventually removed by the police. Wouldn’t the better solution have been to just allow him to participate? Love him or hate him, he is a candidate on the ballot.

Another Toronto Centre debate excluding the majority of Toronto Centre candidates.
I heard this after attending the November 20 debate at Jarvis Collegiate. (More on that in a separate post.) The discussion with Steve Paikan was largely duplicated in the Jarvis Collegiate debate. Therefore those who couldn’t get to Jarvis Collegiate should listen to this.
For those interested in the FATCA question, I suggest that you listen for the few minutes starting at approximately 16:45. Chystia Freeland says some interesting things about equality of citizenship.

Introduction – Equality of Canadian Citizenship – Are Some Canadians less equal than others?
The November 18 debate was the only Toronto Centre “All Candidates Debate“. It was/is the only debate to which each and every Toronto Centre candidate was invited. It was also a specific opportunity to discuss FATCA – The U.S. “Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act” – an extraterritorial law which the U.S. is trying to impose on Canada. It was also the only debate to focus on a topic of clear national importance. As a result it attracted the attention of organizations opposed to FATCA. It was attended by the CBC and attendees outside of Toronto Centre. It was not attended by the the majority of candidates (making one wonder why they are running for Parliament).
